Area Information

Long before the town was founded, French hunters in this area referred to what would become Sallisaw Creek as "Salaiseau," because hunters salted their bison meat there. This was taken from the French word "salaison," meaning salt provisions, and in turn led to the name of the town today.

The town was established when the railroad was brought into the area in 1886. It was subsequently incorporated that same year, although at the time it was located within the borders of Arkansas. The railroad provided economic opportunities for farmers to market their cotton.

Average high temperatures get up to 92 degrees Fahrenheit in July & August, and average lows reach 25 degrees in January. The monthly precipitation average is 3.85 inches. Annual snow averages 5.8 inches.

Sallisaw's public school system contains 4 elementary schools, 1 middle school and 2 high schools. Higher education is offered within 70 miles of town by Northeastern State University, Westark College, the University of Arkansas' main campus and Northwest Arkansas Community College.

Sequoyah Memorial Hospital provides health care to the region.

Sallisaw State Park and adjoining Brushy Lake State Park wrap around the eastern shore of Brushy Lake, a 358-acre body of water featuring a boat dock and walk-out fishing dock. This is an ideal spot for camping thanks to 19 electric & water hookups for RV use as well as 50 primitive sites, 2 group shelters, picnic areas, a playground and more.

Choctaw Blue Ribbon Downs is Oklahoma's oldest horse race facility. It is specially designed to offer fans a close-up involvement in the sport. Race types include quarter horse, thoroughbred, appaloosa and paint horse racing.

4 different city parks feature walking trails, playground equipment, picnic shelters, a basketball court and the city swimming pool. There are public fields for use in baseball, softball, football or soccer events, too.

Nearby Fort Smith is the second-largest city in Arkansas and provides access to many additional amenities and attractions. These include the Ft. Smith historic site where the remains of the original 1817 fort still stand, the Riverfront Amphitheater for outdoor concerts, the Fort Smith Art Center featuring galleries of many types of fine art, and the state's largest indoor mall.
